Air freight companies (also called air cargo agents or air freight forwarders) arrange the shipment of cargo via commercial or dedicated freighter aircraft. They hold IATA cargo agent accreditation, book space with airlines, prepare air waybills (AWBs), coordinate pick-up and delivery, and handle customs clearance for air imports and exports. Air freight is significantly faster than ocean (2–5 days vs 14–35 days) but costs substantially more — typically 4–6× the per-kilogram cost of ocean LCL for equivalent cargo density.
Typical cost: International air freight rates vary by trade lane and market conditions. Trans-Pacific (China to US) economy rates typically run $3.50–$7.00/kg in a normal market, higher for perishables or hazardous cargo. Chargeable weight is the higher of actual weight or volumetric weight (L×W×H cm ÷ 6,000). Most airlines also apply fuel surcharges, security surcharges, and AWB fees on top of the base rate.
Air freight uses the IATA volumetric divisor of 6,000: (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ 6,000 = volumetric weight in kg. You pay whichever is higher — your actual gross weight or the volumetric weight. Air freight makes sense when: (1) your goods are time-sensitive and the 2–4 day transit beats a 3–5 week ocean voyage; (2) your cargo is high-value relative to its weight (electronics, pharmaceuticals, luxury goods) so the rate premium is small relative to cargo value; or (3) the cargo is perishable and cannot tolerate ocean transit times. For bulky, heavy, non-urgent cargo, ocean LCL or FCL almost always wins on cost.
