Air Cargo Rates Fall 3.1% as Fuel Costs Climb

Air Cargo Rates Fall 3.1% as Fuel Costs Climb

Air cargo rates are sliding, and the timing is awkward. Just as spot prices come off their recent highs, jet fuel is getting more expensive, which squeezes the margin carriers were counting on. If you move freight by air, this is the kind of week that shapes how you plan the next quarter. The Baltic Air Freight Index dropped 3.1% in the seven days to 20 July, with the sharpest falls out of Asia and Europe.

What Happened

The index fell 3.1% week on week, pulled down by weaker outbound pricing from the two regions that set the tone for global air freight. Hong Kong took the hardest hit, down 6.3% on the week. Frankfurt followed at 5.2%, Shanghai eased 1.1%, and Singapore softened as well.

This isn't happening in isolation. Fuel costs are climbing, geopolitical disruption keeps rerouting flights, and carriers are being choosy about where they put capacity. So base rates cool on one side of the ledger while operating costs rise on the other. That mix is why the market reads as a balancing act rather than a clean fall.

Impact on Freight Rates and Operations

A falling index looks like good news if you're buying air freight. Cheaper spot rates out of Hong Kong or Frankfurt mean lower quotes this week. The catch is fuel. When jet fuel rises, carriers add or raise fuel surcharges, and those often claw back what the base rate gave up. Your all-in cost can sit flat even as the headline rate drops.

Selective capacity makes it lumpier. Carriers are not flying every lane at full tilt, so a route with thin space can hold its price while the index falls. Asia-Europe pricing is soft right now. But a specific origin pair on a specific day can move the other way. Book on the lane, not on the average.

What Shippers Should Do

  • Ask for the all-in rate. Get base rate plus fuel and security surcharges in writing, so a lower quoted rate doesn't hide a higher surcharge.
  • Watch your lanes, not the index. Hong Kong is down 6.3% while Shanghai slipped only 1.1%. Pull live quotes on your actual origin-destination pairs.
  • Reprice sea-air and LCL options. When air softens, the gap to ocean narrows. Run the comparison before defaulting to your usual mode.
  • Check chargeable weight before booking. Volumetric weight decides the bill on light, bulky cargo, and tighter packing can save you more than this week's rate dip.

Key Takeaway

Air cargo rates are down 3.1% this week, but with fuel rising your real cost rides on the surcharge, not the headline number.

CalculateCBM Take

Air freight bills on chargeable weight, so a 3.1% rate dip only helps if your volume is under control. A 2 CBM shipment from Hong Kong that weighs 200 kg gets charged on 334 kg of volumetric weight (2 CBM × 167 kg/m³), not the 200 kg on the scale. Check your dimensions against the 167 kg/m³ air standard before you book, because right-sizing the packaging saves more than this week's move in the index.
