China Books 121m DWT, 82% of Global Ship Orders | CalculateCBM

China Books 121m DWT, 82% of Global Ship Orders | CalculateCBM

China's shipyards just booked more ship orders in six months than in any full year of their history. Between January and June 2026, yards along the Yangtze and around Bohai Bay signed contracts for 121.06m deadweight tonnes of new vessels, up 173.1% from the same period a year earlier. That single figure equals 82.3% of everything ordered worldwide. If you move freight by sea, this much shipbuilding sitting in one country will shape the ships, the schedules, and the rates you work with for the rest of the decade.

What Happened

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reported 121.06m dwt of new orders at Chinese yards in the first half of 2026. The previous full-year record now sits behind a six-month tally. Owners moved fast to lock in slots for bulk carriers, tankers, and boxships before prices rise further and berths fill up.

The 82.3% global share shows where everyone else stands. South Korea and Japan, once the dominant builders, now split most of the remaining fifth between them. For an owner deciding where to place a newbuild today, China is less a choice than the default, and that pricing power runs straight back to the yards.

Impact on Freight Rates and Operations

More orders now do not mean more ships now. A vessel ordered in mid-2026 usually delivers in 2028 or 2029, because yards are booked years out. In the near term, tight berths keep newbuild prices high, and those costs eventually reach charter rates and the freight bill you pay.

Look further out and the picture flips. A wave of deliveries landing at the end of the decade could add capacity faster than trade grows. When that happens, rates soften. So the timing matters if you are signing multi-year contracts today. You are pricing against a fleet that gets much larger around 2028 to 2030.

What Shippers Should Do

  • Be careful locking long-term rates. The fleet expands sharply late this decade, so a multi-year deal signed at today's tight-capacity pricing could look expensive by 2029.
  • Watch delivery timing, not just order volume. These 121m dwt of orders hit the water in 2028-2030, not next quarter. Near-term rates still turn on the ships already sailing.
  • Build newbuild costs into your carrier conversations. High berth prices feed charter rates now. Ask carriers how their fleet renewal plans affect the rates they quote you.
  • Plan capacity for the 2028-2030 glut. If you can stay flexible on contract length, you keep the option to renegotiate once new tonnage floods in.

Key Takeaway

China now builds four of every five new ships ordered worldwide, and that grip sets the price and the pace of the fleet you will book against for years.

CalculateCBM Take

For your own planning, this shipbuilding surge is a 2028-and-later story, not a next-quarter one. If you are booking LCL or FCL today, your cost still turns on live vessel capacity, not orders that deliver years out. When you quote a 28 CBM shipment from Ningbo, run it through the Container Load Calculator first: whether it fits one 40ft box or forces a second moves your cost far more than any newbuild trend this year.
