EUKOR Completes First Green Methanol Bunkering in Shanghai for Shaper-Class Car Carrier

EUKOR Completes First Green Methanol Bunkering in Shanghai for Shaper-Class Car Carrier

EUKOR Car Carriers has completed its first green methanol bunkering, fuelling one of its new Shaper-class vehicle carriers in Shanghai. If you move finished cars, agricultural equipment or high-and-heavy machinery on ro-ro decks out of Asia, this matters. It is the point where methanol-powered vehicle carriers stop being a shipyard announcement and start being tonnage you can actually book.

What Happened

The bunkering was EUKOR's first with green methanol. The receiving vessel belongs to the Shaper class, the 9,300 CEU dual-fuel design ordered by parent group Wallenius Wilhelmsen and built in China. At 9,300 car equivalent units, these are among the largest vehicle carriers afloat, and they can run on methanol or conventional fuel depending on what the bunker port can supply that week.

That last point is the real story. Green methanol supply is thin and clustered in a handful of hubs, with Shanghai, Singapore and Rotterdam doing most of the work. A dual-fuel ship without a bunkering network is a very expensive conventional ship. Each completed operation at a major hub adds a data point that the supply chain behind the fuel is functioning, and Shanghai is the busiest vehicle export gateway on the planet.

Impact on Freight Rates and Operations

Green methanol costs roughly two to three times conventional VLSFO per tonne of energy delivered. Carriers do not absorb that. It shows up on your invoice as a green fuel surcharge, an alternative fuel contribution, or a fatter BAF line, and it is separate from the base ocean rate you negotiated.

Two regulations make this unavoidable if your cargo touches Europe. The EU Emissions Trading System reaches 100% of surrendered allowances for shipping in 2026, up from 70% in 2025. FuelEU Maritime already requires a 2% cut in greenhouse gas intensity for fuel used on EU voyages, tightening every five years. Carriers running compliant tonnage will price that advantage into contracts. Carriers running old steam will pass through penalties instead.

For ro-ro specifically, capacity discipline is the bigger lever. New 9,300 CEU ships entering service relieve the tightness that pushed car carrier rates to records, but they arrive slowly and they arrive on the head-haul lanes first. Backhaul and secondary trades see the benefit last.

What Shippers Should Do

  • Ask for the surcharge breakdown before you sign. Get the green fuel surcharge, EU ETS pass-through and FuelEU cost quoted as named line items, not folded into an all-in rate you cannot audit next quarter.
  • Check which vessel class your booking sits on. A Shaper-class sailing and a 20-year-old PCTC on the same lane carry very different 2026 regulatory cost profiles. Ask your forwarder for the vessel name at booking, not at loading.
  • Re-run your unit economics per CEU and per CBM. If the surcharge is charged per unit but your cargo is high-cube machinery, your cost per cubic metre moves differently from a sedan shipper's. Model both.
  • Lock longer terms on lanes with confirmed dual-fuel deployment. Where compliant tonnage is already assigned, carriers have more room to hold rates flat than on lanes still served by penalty-exposed ships.

Key Takeaway

Green methanol on a 9,300 CEU car carrier is no longer a pilot, and from 2026 the cost of not being on that tonnage lands on your invoice.

CalculateCBM Take

Ro-ro and breakbulk billing is volumetric, so a green fuel surcharge quoted per CEU hits high-cube cargo hardest. A 4.2 CBM tractor unit and a 14 CBM harvester can be charged the same per-unit surcharge, which means your cost per cubic metre swings by a factor of three between the two. Work out the real CBM of each unit first, then divide the surcharge across it before you compare carrier quotes.
