India Ship Recycling Prices Climb on Tight Supply

India Ship Recycling Prices Climb on Tight Supply

Indian recycling yards ran short of steel plate last week, and the ship recycling market moved up with them. Cash buyer Best Oasis reported firmer bidding across the sub-continent, driven by a supply squeeze rather than any jump in downstream steel demand. If you book dry bulk or tanker space, this is the far end of the chain that decides how much old tonnage leaves the fleet this quarter.

What Happened

Best Oasis, one of the larger cash buyers of end-of-life vessels, said in its weekly report that supply stayed short while yard appetite held up. Cutting activity slowed at the plots, plate inventories thinned out, and several ships earmarked for demolition were still sitting offshore instead of being beached.

The Indian market strengthened during the week due to the limited availability of steel plates, as slow cutting activity and several vessels remaining away from shore restricted…

That combination matters because it is supply-led. Fewer candidate vessels arriving means more yards chasing the same few units, and offers firm without any change in local steel consumption. Prices that rise this way tend to hold only as long as the arrival gap lasts, so watch beaching counts over the next fortnight rather than the headline number.

Impact on Freight Rates and Operations

Firmer scrap values give owners a better exit on ships past 20 years old. When demolition money improves while charter earnings stay soft, more of that older tonnage gets sold for recycling and effective fleet capacity shrinks. The effect shows up in dry bulk and older tanker segments over months, not days, so treat it as a signal about 2027 capacity rather than next week's quote.

There is a second, faster channel. Indian re-rolling mills take plate straight from the recycling plots, and when that plate runs thin the mills buy imported billet and HRC instead. If you move steel into or out of west India, expect some rerouting of those cargoes and tighter space on the trades that serve Alang and Mundra. Container rates are not affected by any of this in the short term.

What Shippers Should Do

  • Lock long-haul dry bulk fixtures earlier than usual. A sustained recycling run removes capacity from exactly the segments where old ships still trade, and that supply comes out quietly.
  • Recheck the age profile of the vessels in your contracts. If a carrier is running 20-year-old tonnage on your lane, a strong scrap market raises the odds that ship is sold and your service gets re-tooled.
  • Budget for firmer Indian steel input costs if you buy locally. Thin plate availability at the yards pushes re-rollers toward imported feedstock, and that price finds its way into fabricated goods within a quarter.
  • Weigh your steel and metal shipments before you book, not after. Dense cargo hits the container weight ceiling long before it fills the volume, and a mis-planned box costs you a second container plus the demurrage.

Key Takeaway

A supply-driven rally in Indian ship recycling means more old ships are heading for the beach, and shrinking fleet capacity always reaches your freight rate eventually.

CalculateCBM Take

Recycled plate and scrap are the densest cargo most forwarders ever book, and that changes how you plan the box. A 20ft container tops out near 28,000 kg payload, so at roughly 7.85 tonnes per CBM you fill the weight limit at about 3.5 CBM of solid steel while 30 CBM of空间 sits empty. Run your load through the CBM Calculator and the Container Load Calculator first, then price on weight rather than volume.
