Iran Says Two Tankers Hit in Strait of Hormuz

Iran Says Two Tankers Hit in Strait of Hormuz

If your cargo moves through the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz just got more expensive and less predictable. Iran says two unidentified oil tankers exploded and lost power while using the waterway's southern passage, and transit counts through the strait have dropped sharply since. About a fifth of the world's seaborne oil passes through this chokepoint, along with container and breakbulk traffic serving Jebel Ali, Dammam, Bandar Abbas and Umm Qasr. When owners hesitate here, the cost lands on your booking within days.

What Happened

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the two vessels had entered a route it described as unsafe or mined, and claimed they did so under US pressure. Neither ship has been publicly identified, and the IRGC has not released evidence for the mining claim. Splash247 reports the incident has pushed the threat level to commercial shipping higher across the strait.

The practical effect is already visible in traffic. Owners are slowing approaches, holding at anchor outside the Gulf, and in some cases refusing new fixtures into the region until underwriters clarify terms. Crews are reporting GPS interference near the southern lane, which forces slower, more manual navigation through one of the tightest shipping corridors in the world. Two-way traffic in the strait narrows to roughly two miles of usable lane in each direction, so there is no room to reroute around a hazard.

Impact on Freight Rates and Operations

War-risk insurance is the first line to move. Additional premium for Gulf transits is quoted per voyage as a percentage of hull value, and it repriced upward after the explosions. Carriers pass that through as a war-risk surcharge on your bill of lading, usually applied per container rather than per shipment, and it can be filed with very short notice.

Expect the second effect on schedules. Fewer vessels willing to call means fewer sailings, and blanked or combined port calls into Jebel Ali and Dammam push equipment out of position. If your goods transship at a Gulf hub, the delay compounds: a missed connection there can add a full week before the box moves again. Bunker costs also rise when ships wait at anchor or run higher speeds through the strait to cut exposure time.

Consolidated LCL cargo takes this worse than full containers. An LCL box only sails once it fills, and when sailing frequency drops the consolidator's fill window stretches. You can lose 7 to 14 days before your pallets even leave origin.

What Shippers Should Do

  • Ask your forwarder for the war-risk surcharge in writing before you confirm the booking, with the amount per container and the effective date. Verbal quotes on Gulf lanes are going stale within 48 hours.
  • Check whether your rate is all-in or subject to emergency surcharges. Most Gulf tariffs carry a war-risk clause that lets the carrier add cost mid-voyage, so a headline rate tells you very little right now.
  • Price the Jeddah or Salalah routing as a backup if your final destination is reachable overland from the Red Sea or Oman. The trucking leg costs more, but it takes the strait out of your transit entirely.
  • Rebuild your volume before you rebook. If your shipment sits near the LCL and FCL crossover, current sailing gaps often make a 20ft box the cheaper and faster choice even when it ships part empty.

Key Takeaway

Treat any Gulf quote as provisional until the war-risk surcharge is confirmed in writing, and run the LCL versus FCL math again before you book.

CalculateCBM Take

Surcharges on Gulf lanes are billed per container, so the LCL and FCL crossover point moves the moment war-risk premium is added. If you are shipping 14 CBM to Jebel Ali, LCL at a per-CBM rate plus surcharge can land within a few hundred dollars of a 20ft FCL, and the box gives you 33 CBM of headroom and a firmer sailing date.
