Kevin Keegan, Multimodal Show Host, Dies Aged 75

If you have walked the floor at Multimodal in Birmingham over the past decade, you have probably seen Kevin Keegan on stage. The former England captain hosted the UK's biggest freight and logistics exhibition three times, handing out awards to forwarders, hauliers and 3PLs who rarely get a spotlight. Keegan has died aged 75 after a battle with cancer. For an industry that spends most of the year in warehouses and port gates, he was the face that made the annual get-together feel like an occasion.

What Happened

The Loadstar reports that Keegan died at 75 following a period of illness. His football record speaks for itself: two Ballon d'Or titles, a European Cup, and three English league championships across spells at Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle United. Eight years after hanging up his boots he came back to Newcastle as manager and took the club back up.

His link to logistics came later. Keegan fronted the Multimodal awards evening on three separate occasions, a night that draws several thousand freight forwarders, shippers, carriers and port operators to the NEC each year. He was not a logistics man and never pretended to be one. He asked questions, told stories about dressing rooms and long coach journeys, and let the winners have their moment.

Impact on Freight Rates and Operations

Nothing about this news moves a rate or a sailing schedule. Container prices will not shift, transit times will not change, and no booking needs to be rethought this week. It would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

What it does affect is Multimodal itself. The show has spent years building an identity beyond a hall full of pallet racking and TMS demos, and a recognisable host was part of that. Organisers will need a new name for the awards night. For the exhibitors who budget around 20,000 to 60,000 pounds for a stand, the draw of the evening event is part of what justifies the spend.

What Shippers Should Do

  • Keep your Multimodal plans as they are. The 2027 show and its awards programme are unaffected. Stand bookings and entry deadlines run on the same calendar.
  • Budget your stand freight early. Exhibition cargo into the NEC is time-critical and priced accordingly. Book the inbound move six to eight weeks out rather than three.
  • Measure your stand crates properly before you quote. Exhibition hauliers charge on volume, and a guessed CBM figure is where the cost overrun starts.
  • Enter the awards if you have a case. Small forwarders win these categories regularly, and the shortlist coverage is worth more than most paid placements.

Key Takeaway

Kevin Keegan's death changes nothing on your rate sheet, but UK freight has lost the one person who made its biggest night of the year feel like more than a trade show.

CalculateCBM Take

Exhibition freight is one of the few moves where volume, not weight, decides almost the whole invoice. A typical 6m x 3m Multimodal stand ships as 8 to 12 CBM of crated flooring, panels and AV, and at road-freight rates into the NEC that difference between a guessed 8 and an actual 12 is often 300 to 500 pounds. Measure each crate and run it through the CBM Calculator before you accept a quote, then check the Container Load Calculator if you are consolidating with another exhibitor.
