What is the current rate for LCL from Shanghai to Mumbai?

Trying to benchmark LCL rates for the Shanghai to Mumbai (NHAVA SHEVA) trade lane. I'm quoting a client for a recurring shipment of about 5–7 CBM per month.

What are people seeing for this lane currently? Any idea about the main consolidators operating this lane and their service quality?

Also — any difference in transit time between direct and transhipment services?

Shanghai–JNPT (Nhava Sheva) is one of the busiest LCL trade lanes in the world. Rates fluctuate significantly by season and market conditions, but here are current benchmarks as of Q1 2025:

LCL Ocean Freight: USD 18–28/CBM (W/M basis)
Origin charges (Shanghai CFS): CNY 120–180/CBM
Destination charges (JNPT CFS): INR 2,500–3,500/CBM

Total landed cost at JNPT per CBM: Roughly USD 30–45/CBM all-in (origin + ocean + destination, excluding customs clearance)

For 5–7 CBM/month, you're looking at approximately USD 150–315 per shipment in consolidated freight.

Transit times:

  • Direct sailing: 16–18 days port-to-port
  • Via Singapore or Colombo transhipment: 22–30 days

Direct sailings are available from most of the major consolidators. However, sailing frequency from Shanghai to JNPT is typically 2–3 sailings per week on consolidated schedules, so a direct sailing departure may be 2–4 days after cargo cut-off.

Consolidators I've worked with on this lane:

  • Geodis has a strong consolidation service with good tracking
  • Flex Port is competitive on rates but service can be variable
  • Local NVOCCs like Gold Field Shipping and Crown Logistics (India-based) have good JNPT relationships and competitive destination handling charges

Note: always get the destination charges quote in INR with a clear list of what's included — THC, CFS handling, delivery order issuance, etc. Surprise charges at destination are the biggest pain point on this lane.

Mike's rate guidance is accurate for current market conditions. I'll add the Indian destination cost breakdown from a customs perspective for completeness:

Typical costs at JNPT for an LCL shipment (5 CBM example):

  • CFS handling charges: INR 12,000–18,000
  • Delivery Order (DO) charges: INR 2,500–4,000
  • Customs examination (if selected): INR 5,000–15,000 additional
  • CHA charges for filing + clearance: INR 8,000–15,000
  • Port dues and seal charges: INR 1,500–2,500

Total India-side costs: roughly INR 24,000–55,000 per LCL shipment (approximately USD 290–660 at current exchange rates), depending on whether examination is triggered.

Port congestion advisory: JNPT periodically faces congestion that adds 5–10 days to actual delivery. Subscribe to the JNPT port advisory or check the port's official website before giving delivery commitments to your client. During peak import seasons (Sep–Nov, pre-Diwali), delays are common.

For a recurring 5–7 CBM/month client, I'd recommend getting a quarterly rate agreement with a consolidator rather than booking spot each time — you'll get better rates and priority space allocation.

Just to share a recent data point: I got quotes for Shanghai–JNPT LCL in March 2025 for a 4.5 CBM shipment. Three quotes ranged from USD 38–47/CBM all-in (origin + ocean + destination). The lowest was from a smaller NVOCC that didn't include destination CFS handling in their quote — once I asked them to add it, the true all-in came to USD 44/CBM.

The lesson: always ask for a truly all-in quote with explicit itemisation. Hidden destination charges are the biggest surprise on this lane.
