I manufacture large agricultural equipment (tractors, harvesters) and need to ship them internationally. What are my options and what documents are required for OOG cargo?

Oversized agricultural equipment is one of the most common OOG (Out of Gauge) cargo categories. Here's how to approach it:

Shipping options, best to least preferred:

  1. RORO (Roll-On/Roll-Off): If your equipment is wheeled and self-propelled (or can be towed), RORO vessels are ideal. Equipment is driven on/off. Cost-effective and lower damage risk from cargo handling.
  1. Open flat rack containers: Suitable for disassembled equipment that fits within flat rack dimensions (20ft: 5.95m L × 2.23m W, no height limit). Maximum weight ~45 MT. Folding flat racks allow easier transport.
  1. Breakbulk: For very large pieces (>45 MT, or exceeding any container dimension), breakbulk shipping on a multi-purpose vessel. More expensive; fewer vessels and port capabilities required.

Pre-shipment requirements:

  • Obtain exact dimensions in transit position (with any attachments folded/removed)
  • Calculate gross weight per piece (including attachments)
  • Provide photos of equipment from all sides
  • Check if fuel must be drained before shipment (typically required — below 1/4 tank)
  • Check if batteries must be disconnected

Documents:

  • Commercial invoice with accurate HS code (agricultural machinery: Chapter 84 of HS)
  • Packing list noting weights and dimensions per unit
  • RORO: Vehicle registration documents (for some countries)
  • Certificate of Origin if claiming preferential duties
