I have a shipment of industrial machinery parts that are not standard box shapes — some are cylindrical drums, some are L-shaped brackets, and a few are irregular castings. My client wants to know the total CBM so we can quote LCL rates.

For normal rectangular boxes, I know the formula: L × W × H (in meters) = CBM. But how should I handle these non-rectangular pieces?

Specifically:

  • A cylindrical drum: 60 cm diameter, 90 cm tall
  • An L-shaped casting: roughly 80 × 50 × 40 cm with one corner cut away
  • A tapered crate: 100 cm at the base, 70 cm at the top, 60 cm tall

Do carriers measure the "bounding box" (the smallest box that contains the item), or do they use actual volume? And does this differ between ocean LCL and air freight?

Great question — this trips up a lot of shippers. The short answer is: carriers always use the bounding box (also called the "outline dimensions" or "overall dimensions"), not the actual geometric volume of the item.

Here's the reasoning: when freight is loaded into a container or consolidated cargo hold, it occupies a rectangular block of space regardless of its shape. The space above an L-shaped casting cannot be used by another piece of cargo in practice, so carriers charge for the full envelope.

For your specific pieces:

  1. Cylindrical drum (60 cm diameter, 90 cm tall): Bounding box = 0.60 × 0.60 × 0.90 = 0.324 CBM. The diameter is both length AND width of the bounding box.
  1. L-shaped casting (80 × 50 × 40 cm): Even though one corner is cut away, the bounding box is 0.80 × 0.50 × 0.40 = 0.160 CBM. No deduction for the missing corner.
  1. Tapered crate (100 cm base, 70 cm top, 60 cm tall): Use the maximum dimension at each axis. Bounding box = 1.00 × 1.00 × 0.60 = 0.600 CBM (assuming the taper is symmetric — if only one side tapers, measure that side's max width too).

Ocean LCL vs Air freight: The bounding-box rule applies to both. However, air freight also applies a volumetric weight calculation (CBM × 167 = chargeable weight in kg) and charges whichever is higher — actual weight or volumetric weight. Ocean LCL consolidators typically charge a minimum of 1 CBM or the W/M (weight or measure) rule, whichever yields more revenue.

Pro tip: When in doubt, round up to the next 0.01 CBM. Carriers measure cargo on arrival and will revise your invoice if declared CBM is lower than actual measured CBM.

Mike's answer is spot on. I'd add one important practical note from a customs perspective: the declared dimensions on your packing list must match the actual bounding box measurements, not the geometric volume.

In India, customs officers sometimes physically measure cargo at the port, especially for project cargo and machinery. If your declared CBM is significantly lower than the bounding-box calculation, it can raise flags and trigger a detailed examination, which means delays and additional examination charges.

For your machinery parts shipment, I'd recommend:

  1. Measure each piece at its maximum dimensions (L × W × H of the bounding box)
  2. Add 2–5% for any packaging/blocking/bracing material you'll use inside the crate
  3. Declare that final figure on your packing list and commercial invoice

Also worth noting: if any of those castings are classified as "out-of-gauge" (OOG) cargo — meaning they exceed standard pallet/container dimensions — they may need special handling and the CBM calculation rules can differ. For OOG cargo, you'd typically need to confirm measurement methodology with the carrier in writing before booking.
