What are the classifications of dangerous goods as per the IMDG code?

The IMDG Code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code) classifies dangerous goods into 9 classes:

1. Locate the UN Number (4-digit number, e.g., UN1993 for flammable liquids)
2. Check the Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS) — Section 14 lists transport classification
3. Search the IMDG Code database or use a DG classification service

Shipping requirements once classified:

• Proper packing group (I, II, or III — severity)
• Approved packaging (UN-certified)
• DG declaration / Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods
• Stowage and segregation requirements on vessel
• Some carriers (especially passenger vessels) prohibit certain classes

Note: Lithium batteries (Class 9) are one of the most commonly misdeclared DG items in e-commerce — ensure you comply with IATA PI 965/966/967 for air or IMDG Special Provision 188 for sea.
