My first container is arriving next week. Walk me through the customs clearance process step by step — what happens, who does what, and how long does it take?

Customs clearance for an import container typically follows these steps:

1. Pre-arrival (24–72 hours before vessel arrival):

  • Your customs broker files an ISF (US) or Advance Cargo Declaration (EU/India)
  • Prepare documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and any permits/certificates

2. Arrival and lodgment:

  • Once the vessel arrives and the shipping line confirms container discharge, your broker files the import entry (Bill of Entry in India; Entry Summary CBP Form 3461 in USA)
  • Duties and taxes are calculated based on HS code, declared value, and country of origin

3. Examination (if selected):

  • Customs may examine 5–20% of shipments physically (X-ray or devanning)
  • Random selection or based on risk profiling
  • Adds 2–5 working days and examination fees

4. Assessment and payment:

  • Duty + applicable taxes (GST/VAT) must be paid before release
  • Many countries allow duty deferral through a general order bond

5. Out-of-Customs (OOC) order:

  • Once cleared, the port/terminal issues a gate-out pass and you can collect or arrange delivery

Timeline: Under normal conditions, 2–5 working days. With examination, 7–14 days. In ports with high congestion, add further delays.

Cost (India example): Customs brokerage ₹5,000–15,000 + import duty (varies by HS code, typically 0–30%) + GST (5–28% on assessable value + duty).
